Dornenreich – Bitter ist’s dem Tod zu dienen

First of all, I’d like to say that I am back from my short impromptu break from supplying you all with the most wonderful music of this world. So without further ado here is one of my favorite melodic/avant-garde black metal bands of all time!

Dornenreich is a experimental black metal band from Austria, who founded in 1996 and their fist demo and album are both great, more traditional, BM albums. Dornenreich consists of three members; Dragomir/Gilván on drums(1996-2001, 2009-present), Eviga on guitar, bass and vocals(1996-present) and Inve on violin(2006-present). As you may have noticed, in 2006, with the release of Durch den Traum, they gained a violinist and started to evolve to a more ambient and folk-esc black metal band. And on their later album In Luft Geritzt they became wholly ambient.  With Flammentriebe(2011) they returned to their black metal roots, but with a more refined style and a violin.

Anyhow, on to Bitter Ist’s dem Tod zu Dienen(1999)! This album is their second full length and is still quite traditional BM, with a heavy focus on guitar melodies and Eviga’s unique vocals. His vocals consist of the more old style of growling, with quite audible, raspy sound, and mixes it with a more vulnerable, wobbly, strained and cracked clear sung parts, which are absolutely fantastic and creates a great juxtaposition to the harsh growls and heightens the beautiful melodic music of Eviga and Gilván. The epic feeling and highly emotional feeling on this, and their other albums, is quite unique to find in a black metal band and if I have to compare it to any other bands, I hate to say that Alcest is quite similar BUT noway near as good!

Dornenreich is a must hear! (By the way, the concert in Göteborg was fantastic! Thanks guys!!!)
