Rise from your grave! *Wooshy magical sounds*
Well now, here’s something I’d never thought I’d write about on my stupid pretentious “art”-music blog; up-beat, pop-y punk-rock, aimed to younger listeners! Life surely throws you curve balls sometimes, huh.
Fir Cone Children is a one-man band by Alexander Donat, of Vlimmer and Blackjack Illuminist Records fame. He released the first album, Everything is Easy, last year. Inspired by his daughter, Fir Cone Children is mostly aimed towards children with fun, up-beat, melodic punk-rock that appeals to everyone. Quite the departure from his other project Vlimmer, which is steeped in gloomy, angsty melancholy. FCC is energetic, positive, and manages to be “proper” sounding music for a younger audience, not the kind of childrens music that looks down on them and grates on everyones nerves. Hadn’t I known the background of the project I would have thought it was just a regular artsy indie pop-rock project. Statement on the genre, or on the quality of the album, you decide.
Not only can Donat make some nice gloomy music, he can also make some nice, hum-able “trallpunk”, and a inoffensive way to introduce the little ones to the world of multi-colored mohawks and social delinquency!
