“The Thirty-sixth Spirit is Stolas, or Stolos. He is a Great and Powerful Prince, appearing in the Shape of a Mighty Raven at first before the Exorcist;
but after he taketh the image of a Man. He teacheth the Art of Astronomy, and the Virtues of Herbs and Precious Stones. He governeth 26 Legions of Spirits;…”
-S. L. MacGregor Mathers, The Goetia – The Lesser Key of Solomon
Prince Stolas is a dark ambient/noise project by Lucas Morris(also in Haine and Micreant), Waddiah Rabiah Chami(also preforming in Disgust and the longer running Winters in Osaka), released the projects first offering, The 26th Legion, in 2012 on Crown Tapes.
The label Crown Tapes is a new and quite interesting label, releasing high quality cassettes of lo-fi tape loops, noise, and wonderful sonic textures, bundled in lovely covers of old wood cut-artwork. All the tapes(and one LP) are released in very limited quantity and I was lucky enough to get my hands on Prince Stolas first cassette.
The 26th Legion is a single sided cassette of marvelous tape loops and excellent atmosphere. The texture of the sounds is grainy, distant, and very much the prime example of lo-fi aesthetics done right. The cassette captures the distant and decayed sound of a old radio in a long since doomed and deserted house, perfectly. Scrunching and gravel textures builds slowly up in intensity while tape loops play a somber melody, until the tape suddenly stops.
Artwork is made by Si Clark who has made a lot of covers for other bands.
Prince Stolas’ The 26th Legion is an excellent mood piece and a great piece of art for any lo-fi dark ambient lovers!
Hail the crown!
